24 Hour urine copper

It is common knowledge that copper supplements in our body are essential for good health. 24-hour urine copper, also known as Non-ceruloplasmin-bound copper is a test undertaken to check the quantity of copper in your body, through urine samples. It also helps in the check for Wilson’s disease.

Copper plays an important role in our body due to many reasons such as;

  • Formation of bones, red blood cells and hemoglobin.
  • Assists an enzyme in the creation of collagen and elastin.
  • Also combines with Zinc and vitamin C to form elastin
  • Involved in the making of melanin

On the other hand, excess of copper can be dangerous for our health. It can cause vomiting, irritability, nausea, diarrhea and other symptoms.

Wilson’s disease is a genetic disorder, where copper accumulates in tissues mainly the brain and the liver, which usually gets displayed as liver disease or neurological or psychiatric problems. This disease is usually seen among 6-20 years of age but cases at a higher age have been reported. Symptoms of neuron-psychiatric problems like Parkinson’s disease, depression, anxiety, migraines, seizures or dystonia are seen in this disease.

Symptoms of liver disease are also seen. In fact, usually Wilson’s disease is diagnosed as liver disease initially. Treatments include medication for the reduction of excess copper in our body and in some cases, liver transplants.

Details of the test

  • There is no need of any prior preparation (only in the case of toddlers, extra samples may be needed).
  • There is no uneasiness as it is a normal urine sample test
Preparation

  • For the test, urine collected over two days is required.
  • On the first day, except the first urination in the morning, collect the rest of the urine in a special container (a plastic bag with an adhesive paper on one side).
  • On the second day, collect all urine, including the first one in the morning, in the container
  • Further, keep the container in a cool place and label the needed details including the time of completion.
  • Collecting urine of an infant might be difficult and might need more than one attempt. Energetic infants can shake the bag, initiating the absorption of the urine through the diaper.
  • Take the container to the laboratory specialist; and pour the contents into a bag that will be given to you.
Results

  • The normal amount of copper supplements should be 10 to 30 micrograms for every 24 hours.
  • Anything more than that amount can mean either Wilson’s disease, Chronic active hepatitis or Biliary cirrhosis.
  • The normal range might vary a little in different results. Check with your doctor for queries or doubts
