Tonsillitis is a common ailment that occurs especially in childhood. It is caused by an inflammation of the tonsils through the infection of bacteria known as Streptococcal haemolyticus. Since the disease spreads rapidly through dust, overcrowded and places with bad ventilation should be avoided as they promote the multiplication of the bacteria. Mild cases of tonsillitis can be cured with medication. Chronic tonsillitis may result in nephritis, rheumatic fever and other problems. In some cases acute tonsillitis surgery may be advised.
Ayurveda for Tonsillitis
Ayurveda has effective medicines for curing tonsillitis. These are herbal preparations made according to the ancient texts of Ayurveda that date back to more than 5000 years. Ayurvedic medicines and therapies are aid at restoring the body’s natural balance so that it can heal itself.
Symptoms of Tonsilitis
The symptoms of tonsillitis are high fever accompanied by pain and swelling of the tonsils. The patient may have difficulty in swallowing due to the inflammation. There may be pain in the ear with or without pus coming out and sore throat.
Cause Of tonsilitis
Bacterial infection is the main cause of tonsillitis. The infection leads to the enlargement of glands in the neck.
Ayurvedic Treatment of Tonsillitis
- The patient is given hot fomentation on the front side of the neck. Neck should be kept covered to keep it warm at all times.
- Gargling with warm salty water at regular intervals pacifies tonsils and provides complete relief within a week. For better results the bark of Babula tree and rock salt can be mixed in warm water and used for gargling.
- For chronic cases of tonsillitis, Agastya Rasayana is prescribed. One teaspoonful of this Rasayana should be taken with honey two times a day for 6 months. The medication should be continued even after the symptoms disappear to prevent further attacks.
- For providing comfort to the throat and to reduce the swelling, a mixture of three herbs namely Vacha, Kulanjana and Yashti madhu is mixed with honey is given.
- Khedivati is a tablet works well in curing tonsillitis. It can be taken in the dose of 6 tablets a day and should be chewed slowly.
- Milk, Lime Basil and Fenugreek seeds are all effective in curing tonsillitis and should be taken regularly.
- Kasamrit Herbal is an herbal Ayurvedic supplements in tablet form and is available across the counter. This should be taken according to the advice of the Ayurvedic physician.
- Sphatica, a type of quartz crystal has properties that can reduce the inflammation of the tonsils and effectively regulate the body temperature as it is antibiotic in nature. The fine powder made from purified sphatica dissolved in lukewarm water is used to treat tonsillitis.
Diet and other Recommendations For Tonsilitis
The affected person should take a well balanced diet especially protein rich foods and foods containing vegetables, fat and grains in proper proportions. Regular exercise ensures fitness and wellbeing. Yoga and breathing exercises are highly recommended.
