Ayurvedic Treatment For Snoring

Snoring can be harmful to one’s health as it is caused by blocked airflow, which decreases supply of oxygen to the cells. It also results in fatigue and inattentiveness.  Sometimes snoring can be a symptom of a more serious disorder known as obstructed sleep apnea (OSA). OSA happens when part of the airway, usually at the back of the throat gets closed off during inhalation while in sleep. This results in stoppage of breathing for more than 10 seconds before resuming again.

Causes For Snoring

  • Seasonal allergies
  • Blockage of nasal passages or airways due to a cold or sinus infection
  • A deviated septum (the tissue and cartilage that separates the two nostrils in your nose)
  • Enlarged or swollen tonsils or adenoids may cause a person to
  • Drinking alcohol can relax the tongue and throat muscles resulting in partial blockage of air movement
  • Overweight causes cause narrowing of the air passages
  • With Age the throat muscles become weak which may cause the surrounding tissues to sag and vibrate.

Symptoms Of Snoring

 
  • Vibrating, rattling, noisy sound while breathing during sleep
  • Excessive sleepiness at daytime
  • Morning headaches
  • Feeling fatigue in the morning
  • Reduced level of attention, concentration, or memory

Ayurvedic remedies for Snoring

Snoring in Ayurveda is attributed to vata dosha vitiation. Improper movement of Prana vata during sleep disturbs the functioning of Udana vata and results in snoring. The following medications are recommended in Ayurveda to cure snoring.
 
Pour three to four drops of warm Brahmi ghee or plain ghee into each nostril in the morning and prior to bed time.
 
Karna Purana therapy - the ear is filled with oil prepared out of herbs such as karanja taila, apamarga kshara taila, bilva taila. This helps in clearing the channels and thus relieves the congestion
 
Shiro dhara therapy soothes the nerves and ensures the sound and deep sleep to the patient. Ksherera bala taila and panchguna taila are the herbs used for this purpose

Precautions to Avoid Snoring

  • Take one teaspoon of olive oil at bedtime each night
  • Oily or spicy foods need to be avoided
  • Fresh fruits and green vegetables are should be taken in good quantity regularly
  • Avoid Pillow while sleeping. In case of using pillow, head position should be elevated while sleeping by an extra pillow.
  • Use of Alcohol and Caffeine containing meals should be avoided
  • Sleep on your side rather than on your back.
  • Maintaining healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly
  • Avoid taking any sleeping pills or medications which forcefully induces sleep
