Home Remedies for Skin Whitening

Skin whitening is a procedure also known as bleaching to make the darker skin to look lighter. Everyone has to go through skin darkening and pigmentation at some point of time due to harsh weather or aging. The darkening of skin is mostly due to the natural aging process or due to excessive exposure to the sunlight or pollution. The pigments in the skin provide protection from the damage through ultra violet rays of the sun. Light skinned people have lesser pigments and are therefore prone to skin damage.


 It is possible to make the skin look fairer by using simple treatments with ingredients available at home. The most common method used for this purpose is exfoliation which involves removal of the dead skin on the outermost layer of the skin showing a new layer.


Home remedies for skin whitening can be prepared at home that can rejuvenate the skin and lighten the tone. These are natural products that do not damage to the skin and are inexpensive and easy to prepare.

Natural Home Remedies for Skin Whitening


1. Lemon has properties to lighten the skin tone. It is therefore considered as natural bleach.  The juice of lemon should be applied on the skin with a cotton ball dipped in it. It can also be used in combination with rose water and applied on the face and neck. Leave it on for about 5 minutes and rinse it off with lukewarm water.


2. A mixture of lemon juice, almond oil, milk powder and honey is also an effective home remedy for lightening the skin.


3. Make a mixture of equal amounts of water and vinegar and smear on the face and keep it for about 15 minutes and wash it off with water.


4. Another good home remedy for lightening the skin is to apply a paste made by mixing sandalwood powder, tomato juice and lemon juice. Leave it on the skin for 10 minutes and rinse it off with cold water.


5. Mix oatmeal with curd and add tomato juice and apply it on the face, neck and hands and leave it for 20 minutes. Wash it off with water and repeat this everyday for whitening of your skin.


6. White vinegar is another home remedy for skin whitening. Mix it with water and apply on the face and wash it after ten minutes for getting a fairer skin.



7. The simplest home remedy for whitening skin is potato. The juice of potato effectively removes pigments and blemishes form the skin.


8. Turmeric is also an excellent bleaching agent. Mix lemon juice and turmeric powder and apply it on the affected skin to lighten the skin darkened by sunburn.


9. Almonds are helpful in skin whitening. Soak a few almonds overnight and peel and grind into a paste and add honey to it. Apply it on the face and allow it to dry. Scrub it off and see the skin glowing.


10. Dried orange peels mixed with curd are good natural bleach and can be used to treat dark skin. It is used as a face mask and left on the skin for 15 minutes before washing it off with water.


11. Drink at least 10 to 12 glasses of water everyday. Water keeps the skin hydrated and nourishes it making it healthy and glowing.


12. Gram flour is another good home remedy for skin whitening. Mix it with honey turmeric powder and lemon juice and milk cream. Mix them and make a paste and apply it on the skin and leave it on for 20 minutes. Scrub it off. This should be repeated on a daily basis.


13. Consume foods that have high fibrous content such as fruits and vegetables as they ca n flush out toxins and wastes from the body thereby removing hyper pigmentation and blemishes of the skin.


14. You can also use exfoliation once in a week to whiten your skin removing the dead cells. This is done by applying a scrub of white oat and brown sugar with milk. This should be scrubbed and rinsed after drying. It can moisturize the skin and gives a lighter tone to it.




There are ways in which you can prevent darkening of the skin. Reduce exposure to sun rays and wear a good sun screen lotion when going out in the sun or for going for swimming. The sunscreen should be re-applied every 30 minutes if your skin is exposed to direct sunlight continuously.
