How to Survive Depression

Many people even today do not acknowledge clinical depression as an illness.  It is actually a serious illness which affects about 17 million Americans every year. But though surviving depression might be a difficult, it is not an impossible task. There are several ways in which positive reinforcement from the people around a depressed person and a sincere effort by him can help him survive the emotional crisis.

Clinical depression is a severe physical illness, caused by chemical imbalance of the dopamine receptors in the brain. Disturbing events, such as heartbreak, professional failure or anything which severely depresses, can cause clinical depression. Feelings of loneliness, incompetence, loss of self confidence or guilt can be called symptoms of depression.

We all have low moments in life, but in clinical depression the depression persists for a very long time, for years sometimes. It can turn life threatening, as it severely affects food and sleeping habits.

There are ways with which one can overcome depression. A person has to

Accept: The most difficult part is to accept that one is suffering from depression. Accepting your condition is the first step, only after that can you make an attempt to survive it.

Talk: Do not bottle up your emotions. Talk to somebody, a loved one, a friend or even your pet. Express yourself verbally.

Distract: Try your level best to distract your mind from depressing thoughts. Indulge in your favorite hobbies or take nature walks which will keep your mind calm.

Seek Medical Assistance: Do not be afraid or embarrassed to seek medical guidance. Clinical depression is a medical condition and needs medication and professional help.

Diet: Diet is very important in this condition. Make sure your diet includes a good amount of fruits, vegetables and all nutrients. Limit alcohol usage, especially if you are taking anti-depressants.

Exercise: Exercise keeps the body and the mind fit. It is known to be a very good method for easing the problem of depression. It also gives an optimistic boost to the working of the anti depressants in the body.

Do Not Expect Miracles: Depression is not a condition which can be solved in a couple of days. It takes a lot of time, positivism and labor. Patience is very much needed.

Hope: Hope is one thing which drives the world. Hope for a better future. Do not lose hope that one day you will overcome this problem.

Meditation: Yoga, meditation or any spiritual activities can immensely help you come out of depression. Sometimes they work better than medicines.

Be Positive: Places of worship, philosophical books or even talking to your physiatrist can help you become positive towards life. Being positive is maybe the most important part of treatment.

Remember that running away from your problems or contemplating suicide is not a solution to solve anything. Face your problems positively and within a relatively short period you can see a change for the better in your attitude and actions.
