A Lip Augmentation procedure is usually preferred by those individuals who wish to enhance their lips and thereby adding onto their good look factors, and those who wish to remove the effects of ageing over the lips. The types of Lip Augmentation procedures could be broadly classified into surgical and non-surgical procedures.
As the name suggests, surgical procedures often involve incisions and various surgical actions. Results of surgical lip augmentation procedures are considered to be permanent or lasting for a long term. On the other hand, a non-surgical lip augmentation procedure involves minimal incisions and the results are considered to be temporary in nature.
Non-surgical lip augmentation procedures are carried out by injecting artificial collagen, hyaluronic acid based gels or its modified versions, calcium hydroxipatite based fillers and various other synthetic polymers. Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are the generally used collagen fillers, and are believed to be made of highly purified human collagen. Evolence is another collagen derived from porcine tendons, and is also used as filler. Juvederm, Radiance (Radiesse), Captique, Restylane and Perlane are examples of hyaluronic acid-based fillers used in non-surgical lip augmentation procedures.
Surgical procedures are usually done under anesthesia or under mild sedation. Such procedures offer more precise or accurate results, and the results last for a long time. The fillers used in such surgeries, unlike those used in non-surgical procedures, does not get absorbed in the body, resulting in minimal side effects and keeping the result intact for a long term. The fillers here are mostly silicon based, polytetraflouroethylene based, or collagen grafts. Collagen grafts are derived from the alloderm and dermaplant, which in turn are derived from the tissue of human donors (postmortem). The most popular surgical and permanent methods are those which involve the usage of synthetic materials, as there would be minimal allergic reactions and rejections, which are usually associated with the usage of fillers derived from animal and other human tissues.
