Organic Food Nutrition Facts

It is a fact that organic foods are highly nutritional and provide several health benefits. The organic food can reduce the toxics of the ingested food. Organic food is free of genetically modified organisms. It does not require high amounts of additives or colorings. It has in it increased amounts of essential vitamins, essential fatty acids and minerals. Mainly, it has increased amounts of antioxidants. It seems organic food can lower the risk of cancer, heart ailments, hyperactivity in children and allergies too. The pesticide residues in organic food are very fewer. These pesticides are also the ones that are used in conventional agriculture. Therefore, buying the organic food reduces the risk of harms caused by pesticides to your health.  


The statistical data released by the U.S. and U.K. governments reveal that the levels of minerals in vegetables and fruit have been deteriorating. This helps concluding that organic fruits and vegetables contain more nutrients when compared to non-organic foods. A review conducted by the Soil Association had shown that organic foods contained more of vitamin C and important minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron and chromium. Other reviews proved that organic crops, when compared to the conventional produces, had higher levels of all the nutrients analyzed. Especially, minerals were found in organic lettuce, potatoes, cabbage and spinach in higher levels. 


A plant generates about thirty-eight phenolics when it is attacked by pests. Phenolics are included in the list of antioxidants. The antioxidants are helpful in reducing some cancers and coronary heart diseases. It is important to know that conventionally grown foods contain phenolics at levels lower to the optimal level. Whereas, organic foods do not get the protection of pesticides and so they contain higher levels of phenolics compounds. Researches have shown that organic crops possess extra amounts of antioxidants in the range of 10 – 50% when compared to the conventionally grown crops. It now goes without saying that organic foods can prevent heart diseases and some cancers effectively. 


Organic foods also contain higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids and linoleic acid. These substances play an important role in metabolism. They can prevent high blood pressure and coronary heart disease. Omega-3 helps reducing the risk of neurological disorders. This includes depression too. Linoleic acid has the proven ability of preventing cancer. It can also prevent the degenerative changes in the artery walls. It reduces body fat and promotes growth. 


The basis of organic livestock production systems is forage based diets. These diets can reduce concentrations of saturated fats. At the same time they can increase the concentration of omega-3. Studies conducted on Swedish children having atopic disorders, namely allergies, showed that children who were consuming organic diet needed antibiotics only in a restricted manner. They had only few vaccinations. They were usually eating foods containing lactobacilli. Atopy was lower among these children. These better conditions of the children were attributed to their consuming organic food. 


In Europe a steady declination had been reported in male reproductive health. Also, Danish research showed that men consuming organic foods had higher sperm concentration. Many pesticides used in conventional agriculture are endocrine disrupters. Organic foods are free from these evils.
