Precautions for Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the cancer that invades the tissues, of the breast ducts and lobules. It can occur at any age and in both men and women. Breast cancer therapy includes different kinds of treatment. The most wide spread are radiation therapy and breast cancer surgery. It is radical but the most efficient treatment that can save life. Breast cancer surgery implicates removal of the mamma and lymph gland. Treatment also depends on the stage of the illness.


Safety measures for breast cancer:


  1. Maintain a healthy body weight throughout your life Weight gain in midlife, independent of BMI, significantly increase breast cancer risk.

  2. Minimize or avoid alcohol Alcohol use is the most well established dietary risk factor for breast cancer.

  3. Consume as many fruits and vegetables – Eat seven or more servings daily. Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts), dark leafy greens (kale, spinach), Carrots and tomatoes protect from breast cancer. It is best to eat them raw or lightly cooked as some of the photochemical believed to offer protections against breast cancer are destroyed by heat.

  4. Exercise regularly – Studies have shown that regular exercise provides powerful protection against breast cancer. Starting with a 30 minutes of moderate exercise or aerobic activity will do well.

  5. Avoid fatty foods – The type of fat in your diet can affect your breast cancer risk.

  6. Maximize your intake of omega-3 fats, especially from oily fish (salmon, tuna). Consume monounsaturated oils as your primary fat source as these foods have potential anticancer properties. 

  7. Avoid toxic deodorants – Chemicals are often used as preservatives in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, it is good to avoid them as parabins are toxic.

  8. Self examination – Learn the proper procedure for self examination checks, and carry out them routinely. Long term use of oral contraceptives, early menstruation, and exposure to top doses of radiation can all build up risk of obtaining breast cancer.

  9. Age 40 years and above – If you are 40 years of age and older you must have an annual mammography screening. If there is a family history of breast cancer and other risk factors then mammogram done after they are 30 years.

  10. Minimize exposure to pharmacologic estrogens and xeno-estrogens – Do not take estrogens unless medically indicated. Lifetime exposure to estrogen plays a fundamental role in the development of breast cancer.

  11. Consume whole food soy products regularly – Foods such as tofu, tempeh, edamame, soy milk have shown a positive association between soy consumption and reduced breast cancer risk.

  12. Maintain a positive mental outlook – Engage in self-nurturing behaviors regularly. Develop rich, warm and mutually beneficial relationships with family and friends. Get adequate sleep.

Early detection can prevent you from complications and save your life.
