Reasons behind pain in the right abdomen are many, most common among those being gastritis, acidity, constipation and indigestion. The increasing number of reasons behind pain in the right abdomen can mostly be traced back to unhealthy eating habits. Eating out very frequently many times lead to food poisoning, stomach upsets or indigestion and all of these stomach ailments cause pain. This is because the level of hygiene and quality of food items provided by restaurants, street vendors and fast food stalls are usually not up to the mark and many a times they even use stale food items to make the dishes which cause problems in the abdomen if taken frequently.
The right part of the abdomen is separated from the left part of the abdomen by an imaginary line starting from the base of the chest through the belly button till the genitals. Apart from these there are also many other organs which though not a part of the right abdomen, can cause pain there because of their own malfunctioning. These organs include tumors from other parts of the body and the lower part of the right lung.
Reasons Behind Right Abdominal Pain
Diagnosing a pain in right side of abdomen is quite difficult. Here are the few causes that lead to right side abdominal pain:
Constipation: Abnormal eating habits can lead to constipation and thus pain in the right abdomen. Though it is not serious but can lead to discomfort in normal routine. To get rid of constipation, take foods rich in fibers and increase the consumption of fluids. Laxatives are the commonly available OTC drugs in the market.
Appendicitis: It is common among the age group between 10 to 30 years. The pain due to appendicitis starts from belly button and gradually radiates to the right side of abdomen. It is often accompanied by fever, vomiting and decrease in appetite. The only treatment left for appendicitis is its surgical removal at the time of pain.
Ectopic Pregnancy: In this condition, the embryo gets implanted in the fallopian tube instead of uterus thereby leading to severe pain in the right side of abdomen. This is often accompanied by vaginal bleeding. The only treatment left in case you experience pain due to ectopic pregnancy is to abort the growing embryo and in some cases fallopian tube needs to be removed.
Ovarian Cysts: They are most common cause of right side abdominal pain in case of females. Though they are not serious but if ruptured can lead to peritonitis, which is a life threatening condition.
Hernia: It is the accidental protrusion of an organ outside its protective wall. Right side hernias can trigger pain in the right abdomen. Patient can come with swelling in the abdomen, stomach bloating, nausea, vomiting and obstruction in bowel movements. Surgery is the only treatment for pain due to hernia.
Endometriosis: Swelling in the endometrial wall can trigger pain in the right abdomen. In such cases, pain is alleviated during menstrual cycles.
Kidney Stones: Kidney stones are the commonest cause behind pain in the right abdomen. The pain is radiating to the loin region. Kidney stones cause pain while urinating and requires surgery.
Food Poisoning: Major causative organisms behind food poisoning include E.coli, Salmonella and Botulism. They lead to abdominal cramps thus causing vomiting and diarrhea thereby leading to severe dehydration and pain in the abdomen.
Lymphadenopathy: It is the major cause of right abdominal pain in children. Its symptoms include swollen neck glands, cold and sore throat. Other symptoms are common to that of appendicitis except the fact that the child doesn’t lose its appetite.
Reasons Behind Chronic Right Side Abdominal Pain
Irritable Bowel Syndrome: I.B.S is accompanied with irregular bowel habits like constipation and diarrhea. Patient can experience a feeling of fullness, gas or bloating sensation that last for 3 days a month from past three months.
Chron’s Disease: Its symptoms are similar to IBS but it usually affects the intestine. Its symptoms include fever, fatigue, abdominal cramps, loss of appetite, weight loss and pain while passing the stools.
Giardiasis: It is the infection of small intestine and is common in travelers and hikers as they consume water from streams and lakes that are a house for Giardia lamblia, a causative organism behind giardiasis. Its symptoms are pain in the right side of abdomen, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, headache and low grade fever.
Ulcerative Colitis: It is also similar to IBD but it is seen in large intestine. The symptoms include pain in abdomen, abdominal sounds, bloody stools with pus, diarrhea, fesssver and weight loss.
Colon Cancer: it is seen in colon and is common in people above 60 years of age consuming excess of processed meat. Its symptoms include pain in abdomen, tenderness of stomach, narrow stools, diarrhea and weight loss.
