What Causes Dreams

It is considered that a man dies the day when he stops dreaming. Literally speaking, it is quite difficult to lead a healthy life without dreaming. In other words, dreams teach us to live. When a person goes to bed, he hardly knows that he will have a dream. Whether it’s a reverie or a dream (as we call it), it always gives a sort of momentary satisfaction. It might happen that after you wake up from sleep, you forget the dream…but the truth is a dream is never forgotten it actually lies deep within our hearts. The very feeling of wishing someone a ‘goodnight and sweet dreams’ is such a wonderful experience. But you may wonder that why does a person dream? Well…there can be many reasons as to why a person actually dreams. This article will discuss all the possible reasons of this. Dreams help us in serving a purpose. They actually serve any particular function for the mind as well the bodies. In the recent time, several dream analysts are concentrating on the process of interpreting dreams and they are also interested to find out what is the cause of dreaming. Craig Webb, the famous dream analyst has said that before finding out the causes of dreaming, it is important for you to understand what are dream. Therefore, let’s start our discussion by defining dreams.

In general, dreams are defined to be such an experience that is remembered after awakening which comes through the nonphysical channels. Basically, a dream is that altered experience which you have while sleeping & which is remembered after waking up. However, there can be many other definitions of a dream as well. According to some experts, dreams are the wishes and life goals of the future. Actually there is a link between both these definitions as sometimes people do dream of future wishes as well as great wishes in the sleep.

Dreaming is the ‘natural function’ of all mammals living on earth. The dogs show similar physiological cycles like the human beings, REM. Therefore, according to Webb, both of them have similar kinds of dreams.
Dreams are considered to be a happy experience for several people where as dreams can also take a terrible manifestation in your mind. Whether you are having a good or bad dream, in either case, the body gets recycled to some extent.
As far as the reasons of dreaming are concerned, there are 2 ‘schools of thought’ -psychological school, and physiological school that puts up their opinion. But both the schools agree that a person dreams during rapid eye movement or REM stage of sleep. During this stage of sleep, the closed eyes move rapidly around, the muscles are temporarily paralyzed and the brain is in its peak activity mode.
According to the physiological school of thought, it mainly tries to figure out the function of the brain during REM stage of sleep. The founders of physiological theory are of the opinion that a person dreams for exercising the pathways or synapses, between the brain cells. It also says that dreaming occurs when awake and active brain stops functioning momentarily. When you are awake, the brain keeps on transmitting and receiving messages constantly through the numerous brain cells in order to reach the right destinations. Thus they help the body to remain in permanent and long-lasting motion. Dreams substitute this function.
As far as the psychological theory is concerned, the experts here mainly takes into consideration the emotions and thoughts and then speculates those dreams. They are of the opinion that dreams are based on the current concerns of the lives like unfinished business of the day. It could also be those issues that you were not able to solve during the day. The dreams can thus teach you many things about which you were not aware of in the past.
There is a close connection between human psyche and dreams which have been established over the years. The famous psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud, was of the opinion that dreams are symbolic in nature and they represent the repressed thoughts and wishes. Therefore, to understand why people dream, you need to first have a clear knowledge about dreams as discussed in this article.
